In light of the recent and tragic shooting in Washington, D.C., the Trump Administration has announced a temporary pause on all asylum decisions nationwide. President Trump stated that there is no defined time limit for this pause and that it could extend for a significant period.

USCIS Director Joseph B. Edlow shared the following statement on social media:

“USCIS has halted all asylum decisions until we can ensure that every alien is vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible. The safety of the American people always comes first.”

This sudden development understandably raises concerns for individuals seeking protection in the United States. Many asylum applicants have already endured long waits, difficult journeys, and uncertain futures. We recognize the anxiety that this announcement may cause and want to provide clarity on how this pause affects your case.

What This Means for You

📌 Pending Asylum Applications with USCISIf your asylum application is currently pending, it will remain pending. At this time, you will not be scheduled for an interview, and there will be no movement on your case until the pause is lifted.

📌 Applicants Who Have Already Completed an InterviewIf you have already attended your asylum interview, USCIS will not issue a final decision on your application until the pause is lifted. Your case is essentially on hold.

📌 Filing a New Asylum ApplicationImportantly, the pause does not affect the filing of asylum applications. If you are eligible to apply, you may still submit your application and begin the process. Filing timely remains crucial, especially for applicants subject to the one-year deadline.

What You Can Do Now

This policy pause does not mean you are powerless. You can—and should—continue taking steps to protect your rights:

  • Prepare documentation and evidence in support of your claim

  • Attend check-ins, biometrics, and other required appointments

  • Seek guidance from qualified immigration counsel

  • Maintain updated address information with USCIS and the Court

  • Continue complying with all governmental requirements

We are here to walk with you through this uncertain moment. Our firm represents asylum seekers from all backgrounds, and we understand the emotional, legal, and human challenges that come with this process. You are not alone.
